Surfing in My Living Room – My New Normal of Mind Body Care Connection by Lois Kramer-Perez CHt

I have had lots of conversations with friends, family, clients, and colleagues regarding the current state of our world during this COVID-19 situation. The emotions vary from anger, frustration to relief and a new sense of peace.

While you cannot control what is happening around you, you can control your choices and how you respond rather than react.

Create your new normal with healthy choices – fill yourself up with beneficial energy.

I have had many conversations where people are finding time to nourish themselves with activities they used to just think about, such as:  regular meditation, reading time, exercise and creative time: art, writing, music, dance.

What gift have you given to yourself during these past few months?

Take the good stuff with you! Leave the gunk behind!

I am not interested much in traditional exercise – but I am finding I sit way too much at my desk typing and zooming!  I took out my “simply fit board” which I bought after watching an episode of Shark Tank and proceeded to twist my way to surfing the waves of Hawaii! Not only did I get a good physical work out, my imagination had fun too!
I will be taking my “simply fit board” out of my isolation time with me.

What beneficial new behavior will you take to your new way of living?

Is there something else you find you want to leave behind?

Make a plan – when you are ready to let go of something – replace it something you choose, otherwise a random choice will be made for you.

Are you putting the needs of others ahead of your own, finding your needs moving further away from the top of your list?  What would happen if you took some time for yourself?

What would happen if you said to your family:
“I am going to take some time for me, see you in 1 hour.”?

Make a plan, take some time for yourself. Notice how good it feels to feel good.

Your mind body connection helps you care for yourself as you begin noticing how your body is talking to you. What is happening in your mind is directly connected to your body. Your thoughts are constantly sending messages to your body with information. These messages can cause you to; clench your jaws, tighten your shoulders, stiffen your back or cramp your legs, just to name a few. These messages are creating patterns which your body become familiar expressing on automatic pilot. Change your reaction to response when you notice the messages your body is speaking.

Choose to redirect your attention on a regular basis, by becoming aware of your body, noticing how it feels. You will notice when your shoulders are moving up into your ears and when your jaw begins to clench. You know exactly what to do! Take a smiling breath and release that built up tension.

Here are a few simple things to include in your day:
Set your intention for the day before you get out of bed stretch like a cat taking a few deep breaths, smiling as you connect with your intention.

–Notice how your body feels, set a parameter for noticing how it feels when you are relaxed, focused, and clear, so you can redirect your attention once you notice a physical change.

–Take two deep breaths every hour, after completing a task, a series of phone calls or as you notice your body tensing. Focus on 2 deep belly breaths, smile, and exhale stress, stiffness, and stress.

Stand up and move, especially when you are sitting for long periods of time. March in place for 20 steps with your arms swinging.

–Drink lots of fresh pure water, this not only keeps you hydrated, but will nudge your bodies to get up every so often.

Dowsing
Pause, Breathe, and Now What?
Pause, Breathe, Play.
Sometimes the stage is set for us.
What can we do when circumstances are out of our control?
Go with the flow? Let it go?
Hmmm..  sometimes we do resist.  and that famous saying is “what we resist persists”
When we are stressed and someone says “Relax” – do we?
I don’t!
It has to come from within, it has to be our choice.
Create a new model.
Decide to Pause, when needed or when that is the best choice.
Choice. Decide to Choose.
How Do We Begin?

Our bodies respond to information based on what it knows, for instance – if we feel the emotion of anxiety, our body will recall the chemicals that support that feeling, the more we confirm the feeling of anxiety – the stronger the support becomes.  Now we are going to begin to change our relationship to how we notice and respond to these feeling. We move from “reaction” to “responding”

We feel the effects of charges of information we pick up all the time, as we “react” to a thought, it connects with our emotions, our body has a memory of how it reacts to these feelings, chemicals which support that feeling are sent rushing through our body, this our typical “reaction.” We then believe that We Are that feeling, we are frustrated, or we are angry, and then we begin to “judge” ourselves & how we are feeling, which only strengthens these feelings, creating distraction,

We begin, becoming aware, we pay attention and notice when we begin to feel a strong emotion – before we “react” and decide we are angry, upset, distracted by these “negative thoughts”, begin to redirect ourselves.

First: Notice the feeling that arises and how your body is responding – do not judge it, become aware that this is just information, it is not who you are, it doesn’t define you, you are not that feeling.

Acknowledge you have felt this feeling before, and will feel it again in your lifetime, but it is not who you are, it will not overwhelm you,

Second: Redirect your thoughts: Replace the thought supporting that feeling with something positive: such as: This feeling dealing with “x” feels like frustration, but I am not frustrated, that was just information as to how my body was responding to this situation, now that this is done, I feel relieved, clear and grounded, all of those distractions from this situation are gone. I am focused, I feel positive, I am refreshed, I am abundant.

We can create the state we can choose to become.
We practice our new power and state of being.
Practice Choosing.
Practice Being.

Stretch Like A Cat

Have you ever had one of those days when you seem to lose time, such as getting in your car and then ending up at your destination, not even aware of how you got there?

We usually do not notice we are running on auto-pilot until something wakes us up.
We want to embrace all of our experiences, be present, so that we are available to embrace all opportunities before us.

What are we to do?

We can mindfully choose to redirect our attention on a regular basis, by becoming aware of our body, noticing how it feels. We will then be more aware when our shoulders seem to be moving up into our ears or when our jaw begins to clench.

Here are a few tips:

-Set your intention for your day, before you get out of bed – Stretch like a cat ~ take a few deep breaths, smile and connect with your intention.

-Notice how your body feels, set a parameter for noticing how it feels when you are relaxed, focused and clear, so you can redirect your attention once you notice a physical change.

-Take at least two deep breaths every hour, or after you complete a task, a series of phone calls or if you notice your body tensing  –  focus on 2 breaths and just feel it.

-If you are sitting for long periods of time, get up and stretch like a cat every hour or so, and march in place for 20 steps swinging your arms, if possible.

-Drink lots of fresh pure water, this will keep you hydrated and nudge you to get up every so often.

-take a 30 second vacation with me ~ I created these videos to help you with these moments..

-Smile as you breathe, your cells will smile right back.. ahhh

I would love to hear how this is working for you, contact me at lois@loiskramerperez.com

The Process of Change – I’m Feeling Nothing??

When we are going through a process of change, it is very typical that we can have expectations of what this process of change will feel like. We can get so focused on the expectation; we can become immune to what is actually happening. Have you ever felt like you were holding your breath, waiting for something to happen…well, you were! Sometimes, I find myself, holding my breath- did I think it will help my concentration…connect me to what I was doing? ha ha ha… quite the opposite.. Everything just stopped, my shoulders were up in my ears, my body became tense.. So what to do – Take a Breath ~ Ahh… just breathe…feel your body relax, connect to what you ARE feeling, if you think it is nothing, well that is just a label. If we notice without expectation, we find we ARE feeling something!

When I first had this conversation with myself, the song “Nothing” from “A Chorus Line” came into my head ~ the message for me is, we all feel things differently ~we are all different in our own unique way, perfect for who we are~ a reminder not to compare ourselves to others ~ Enjoy Being!
“Breathe…
It only takes a moment to take a breath,
It only takes a moment to become inspired”
